What are dental crowns made from and how are they fitted?

Dental crowns can be made from a range of materials, from metal to zirconia. Once it has been decided that crowns are your best option your dentist will clean the tooth, removing any decay while reshaping it with a burr to prepare it for the crown. Once this preparation is completed an impression of your tooth will be made and sent to a dental lab to create a crown, which will be bespoke and fit your tooth perfectly.

During your first visit you will be fitted with a temporary crown until your personal crown is created, which is about 2-3 weeks after your impression has been made. When you come back for your second visit the temporary crown is removed and your tooth is treated with an etching acid, which roughens the outside of your tooth to make it an ideal texture to bond with your new crown. Your crown will then be cemented into place. All of this will be carried out under local anaesthesia.

How long do crown last?

If you take good care of your teeth and stick to an excellent oral hygiene regime, you can expect your crown to last 10-years.
